Peter P. Lopez, MD, FACS, FCCP, CNSP

Assistant Professor of Surgery

Peter Lopez is an Assistant Professor in General and Laparoendoscopic Surgery Division of the Department of Surgery at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. He is a general and trauma surgeon, a surgical intensivist, and a Co-Director of the Surgical Intensive Care Unit at Audie L. Murphy VA Hospital. Next to his busy clinical practice he has a strong interest in clinical and translational research in the areas of weight-loss and general surgery, cricital care and trauma. Peter received his Medical Doctorate in 1990 at the University of Illinois in Chicago, IL. After completing a Rotating Internship in 1991 at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, MI he joined the Family Practice Residency program at Rush Medical College in Chicago, IL (1991-1994). Driven by a strong interest in surgery, he joined the General Surgery Residency program at Wayne State University in Detroit, MI from 1994 to 1999. Following the completion of his residency programs, he completed a Surgical Critical Care Fellowship (1999-2000) and a Trauma Fellowship (2000-2001) at the University of Miami in Miami, FL. In 2002, he accepted an Assistant Professor position in the Daughtry Family Department of Surgery at the University of Miami in Miami, FL. In 2005, he was recruited to the Department of Surgery at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. Dr. Lopez is board certified in Family Practice, General Surgery, Surgical Critical Care, and Nutrition Support.

Dr. Lopez's eclectic training translates into a wide-range of research interests and collaborations, such as a project recently funded by the National Orifice Surgery Consortium for Assessment and Research (NOSCAR). He is in the process of developing his independent translational research program in the area of weight-loss surgery. The current emphasis of his research program is establishing the metabolic, endocrine, and cardiovascular effects of a novel bariatric surgical procedure, sleeve gastrectomy. He is working with General Surgery Resident Gabe Burkhardt on this project.

Dr. Lopez is Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, as well as the American College of Chest Physicians. He is a member of numerous professional societies, including the American Society for Bariatric Surgery and the Society for the Surgery of the Alimentary Tract. He serves on various national committees including the Flexible Endoscopy Committee of the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons, and the Membership Committee of the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma. His other professional society affiliations include Society of Critical Care Medicine, American Burn Association, American Academy of Family Practice, American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons, American Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association, American Medical Association, American Society of Breast Surgeons, Southeastern Surgical Congress, American Society of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition, Panamerican Trauma Society, Southwestern Surgical Congress, and the Society of Laparoscopic Surgeons.
